Smilla Holmberg had a big impact on Wednesday’s 7-0 win at home to Leicester City in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Traditionally a right-back, Smilla was deployed higher up on the right wing for the visit of the Foxes, and rewarded Renée Slegers’ decision with multiple attacking contributions.

Indeed, she provided two goals and one assist on the night.

“It was very fun and it’s always fun to play at Emirates and with this team,” she said after the game. “It was a special night and it was very fun.

“I think it’s pretty similar to the role I’ve played before here. I like to be involved in the offensive part as well so I just try to control my qualities and enjoy the game today.”

Two of our goals in particular were all about the timings of the run, which were spot on. Holmberg’s first goal came as she darted beyond Ashleigh Neville and received a great pass from Frida Maanum, and in the second half the former delivered a delightful corner for the onrushing Leah Williamson to head home.

“I worked really hard and it’s just a great feeling to score my first goal at this special club,” Smilla reflected. “Again, I’m just so proud.

“I’ve dreamed of scoring my first goal here at Emirates so it was so fun and I really enjoyed it.”

It was an ideal way to set us up for this weekend’s UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final away to Lyon, where we go with a 2-1 lead on aggregate.

“We talked about before the game that there’s always big games here at Arsenal and we have to take one game at a time,” Smilla added. “First of all, we did a great game last weekend and had a good game today so now we have to be ready and focused on Saturday.”
