Talking about BMX Freestyle in Colombia is talking about Alejandro Caro Ospina. ValleCauca, former sportsman, pioneer and today national coach. He has been a key piece in the technical, logistics and sports development of discipline in the country.

His vision led him to lead the construction of the BMX Freestyle park in Armenia, a scenario that was born for the National Youth Games 2024 and that today, after the first national valid, is consolidated as the official house of this modality in Colombia.

With the enthusiasm of duty fulfilled and the look fixed on the future, Caro spoke about the importance of this track, the future events that will be carried out, the institutional support received in Armenia, the present of the athletes and the expectations on the road to the Olympic Games of Los Angeles 2028.

How do you evaluate what was lived this weekend in Armenia with the first national valid?

It was a total success. This is a dream that we had nine years ago with the Colombian Cycling Federation. We could not realize it because we did not have the stage, but since this track was built for the National Youth Games, our sport has given a very substantial change.

What does it mean to have this scenario for the Colombian Freestyle BMX?

For us, this is the key training site for our Olympic cycle towards Los Angeles 2028. It is a completely professional park, with exact measures of the International Cycling Union (ICU) and everything that athletes need to train.

This week we even install cushioned ramps for safer training. We have the perfect platform for national competitions and to add points in the ranking.

Do you know what this represents for Armenia as a city?

Having a scenario of these characteristics in Armenia is incredible. They have received us with open arms and we have felt institutional support, especially the director of Imdera, Wilson Herrera. Without that support, this would not have been possible.

How do you analyze the potential growth of the BMX Freestyle in the country?

The 68 athletes who came to the first valid are just those who could afford the trip and get the license. But in Colombia there are more than 10,000 athletes practicing BMX Freestyle. There are many in Bogotá, Quindío, Valle del Cauca, Antioquia. I am sure that in the next valid one, which will be next month, we could have twice athletes.

What is expected of the following valid?

We will have another scoring competition in the UCI calendar in about three months. That will be key because it adds points for international ranking, which makes it much more attractive. There we will begin to have a better dimension of the real athletes census in Colombia. And the best thing is that we have an overprofessional and beautiful place to do our sport.

How is the Colombian Freestyle BMX on the way to the Los Angeles Olympics?

Regarding the Olympic cycle, Queen Saray goes first in the individual ranking, she is the best athlete on the planet at this time. As a country we are third in the female ranking and eleventh in the masculine, which today would give us two places for women and one for men.

The goal is to continue competing, adding points and get with three hopefully four athletes to Los Angeles. For Paris 2024 it was very hard to qualify, but I think that for the next games the process will be simpler, and we already have what.
