He has been baptized by the press as “the oldest baby in the world”
A male baby was born in Ohio of an embryo that had been frozen for more than 30 years, which establishes a new world record.
Lindsey and Tim Pierce, 35 and 34, welcomed their son Thaddeus Daniel Pierce last Saturday.
Lindsey told the magazine MIT Technology Review that his family thought that “he was something taken from a science fiction movie.”
It is believed to be the embryo that has remained frozen before giving rise to a birth alive. The previous record was held by twins that were born in 2022 from frozen embryos in 1992.
The Pierce tried to have a child for seven years before deciding to adopt the embryo that Linda Archerd, 62, conceived in 1994 with his then husband through fertilization in vitro.
At that time, Archerd froze four embryos. One became his daughter, who is now 30 years old, and the other three were stored.
Despite separating from her husband, she did not want to get rid of the embryos, donate them to investigate or deliver them to another family anonymously.
For her it was important to be present in the baby's life, since she would be a relative of her adult daughter.
Adopted embryo
Archerd paid thousands of dollars a year for storage until he found a Christian agency that seeks parents who want to adopt frozen embryos, Nightlight Christian Adoptions. Many of these agencies consider their programs to save lives.
The program that Archer resorted allows embryos donors to choose a couple, which means that they can specify their religious, racial and nationality preferences.
Archerd preferred a married Caucasian Christian couple who lived in the United States, since he did not want to “leave the country,” he explained to MIT Technology Review.
Finally, he found the Pierce.
The in vitro fertilization clinic of Tennessee in which the couple underwent the procedure, Rejoice Fetryity, states that their goal is to transfer any embryo that it receives, regardless of their age or conditions.

Archer told MIT Technology Review that he has not yet met the baby in person, but that he already sees a resemblance to his daughter.
