The Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, spoke this Saturday with the president of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, as part of his round of contacts after confirming that the US president, Donald Trump, will meet on August 15 with the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, and urged the EU to have a role in the negotiations so that Moscow does not end up imposing. “Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,” said Sánchez.
Zelenski thanked Sánchez to support Ukraine and informed him of the current diplomatic situation and about his vision as to what should be the next steps, he wrote in X.
“The most important thing is now to ensure that Russia does not impose any unrealistic conditions again,” he emphasized.
Zelenski said that Sánchez and he share the point of view that “the voice of Europe must be taken into account” in the conversations that maintain the Kremlin and Washington, after it is evident that they do not intend to invite the Ukrainian president to the top of leaders in Alaska.
“We are coordinating our common European position. We are willing to move in the fastest and most constructive way possible towards a fair peace,” said Zelenski.
Finally, the Ukrainian leader also addressed with Sánchez the path of kyiv towards European integration.
“Ukraine has fulfilled all its obligations and is completely ready to open the first negotiation package. We discuss possible options and seek solutions. We agreed to remain in contact,” he concluded, with respect to the telephone conversation with the head of the Spanish Government.
The communication occurred as part of the call of calls that this Saturday has led Zelenski to speak with British prime minister, Keir Starmer; the French president, Emmanuel Macron; the Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen; and the Estonian Prime Minister, Kristen Michal.
After these conversations, Zelenski riveted that a “real” end of war is needed, with reliable security guarantees for Ukraine and stressed that until now Moscow has not changed behavior, although Washington's ultimatum to take concrete steps towards peace, under penalty of incurring additional sanctions, he expired this Friday.
In addition, the Ukrainian President reiterated that the Constitution of Ukraine prevents him from carrying out territorial assignments, after Trump hinted that a negotiated agreement would possibly imply the Ukrainian resignation to a part of his territories in exchange for Russia to deliver some of those he occupies right now.
