The president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced Friday that the raffle of the 2026 World Cup group phase, which will be played in that country with Mexico and Canada, will take place on December 5 at the Kennedy Center in Washington.
The announcement was made from the Oval Office of the White House, accompanied by the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, and senior officials of his government, including vice president JD Vance and the Secretary of National Security, Kristi Noem.
The tournament, scheduled between June 11 and July 19, 2026, will be played in 16 cities in the three host countries and will bring together 48 selections, 16 more than in the editions played between 1998 and 2022.
“It is a great honor to bring this world event, to this incredible group of people and the best athletes on the planet, to the cultural center of our capital,” Trump said about the raffle that will take place in the emblematic Washington enclosure.
Before the act, the president visited the Kennedy Center to personally supervise the reconditioning works that advances his administration in the facilities.
“The FIFA 2026 World Cup will be the largest and most complex set of events in the history of sport, and the Kennedy center will give you a phenomenal start,” said Trump, who compared the magnitude of the tournament with “organizing several Super Bowl in a short time.”
During the ceremony, Infantino gave Trump the World Cup trophy, highlighting that it is an object reserved for the “winners”, like him and as Leo Messi, the last to lift him. “Since you are also a winner, you can touch it,” said FIFA leader. Trump joked asking if he could stay with him and suggested that he would keep him in the oval office until the start of the World Cup, as happened this summer with the Club World Cup trophy held in the United States.
