I was in the emergency room of the Nasser Hospital “when the explosions destroyed the operating room next door,” said a medical help organization for Palestinians in Gaza.
Hadil Abu Zaid described the “unbearable” scene, while another medical professional, who did not want to be identified, said he was also in the emergency room when there was a second attack.
“The reality is that there is no safe place,” he said.
At least 20 people, including five journalists working for international media, died Monday in an Israeli attack against Nasser Hospital, in the south of the Gaza Strip, according to the Ministry of Health of the Territory.
Four of the journalists worked for agencies ReutersAP, Al Jazera y Middle East Eyethe media confirmed.
Several people died in an initial attack and others lost their lives in a second attack that happened while rescuers came to the place, Gazatí civil defense reported.
The Office of the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamín Netanyahu, reported through a statement in the social network X that “Israel deeply regrets the tragic accident today at the Nasser de Gaza hospital.”
The Israel Defense Forces (FDI) confirmed the attack through a statement.
“The chief of the General Staff ordered an initial investigation as soon as possible,” says the text, adds that the IDF “regrets any damage to people not involved and do not attack journalists as such.”
“IDF act to mitigate the damage to people not involved as far as possible, while maintaining the safety of their troops.”
The director of the World Health Organization condemned the attack in which he said several health workers died.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported that the affected area houses the hospital emergency service, the hospitalization room and the surgical unit, in addition to the emergency staircase, which was also damaged.
In an X publication, he added that among the injured there are “patients in critical condition who already received medical care.”
“While the population of Gaza suffers hunger, its already limited access to medical care is even more affected by repeated attacks,” Ghebreyesus said.
“They stop the attacks on medical care. Alto the fire already,” said the WHO director.
International reactions
The president of France, Emmanuel Macron, described the attacks as “intolerable” and said that civilians and journalists “must be protected in any circumstance.”

“The media must be able to exercise their mission with freedom and independence to cover the reality of the conflict. Humanitarian aid must return. We call Israel to respect international law,” Macron added.
For its part, the German Foreign Ministry said the Government is shocked by the death of several journalists, rescuers and other civilians. He asked that the attack be investigated.
Turkey's head of communications, on the other hand, said that Israel “has committed another crime against humanity” in a statement, while the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the United Kingdom, David Lammy, said he is “horrified.”
Previously, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, made some comments on the incident.
When asked about the attack, he initially seemed to have knowledge, saying: “When did this happen?”
When he was pressed to respond, he said: “I don't want to see it. At the same time, we have to end everything. A nightmare.”
In addition, he mentioned the issue of Israeli hostages that remain in Gaza, qualifying the situation as “unpleasant.”

The AP news agency reported that Mariam Dagga, an independent journalist who worked for the organization, also died.

Among the other deceased are Mohammad Salama, from Al Jazera; Ahmed Abu Aziz, independent journalist of Middle East Eye; and photographer Moaz Abu Taha.
Monday's attack occurs two weeks after six journalists, including four chain Al Jazerathey died in a selective Israeli attack near the Shifa hospital in Ciudad de Gaza.
With these last deaths, the number of journalists killed in Gaza since the beginning of the war in October 2023 amounts to almost 200.
According to the Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ), an agency that promotes press freedom, the war in Gaza has been the deadliest conflict for journalists ever documented.
Israel has banned international media, including BBC, to enter the Gaza Strip independently, although it has authorized controlled access to some reporters.
