At least five people have died and more than ten have been injured in a shooting on Monday north of Jerusalem, according to the local press.
The Israeli police and the Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency service have said that the two alleged attackers have been “neutralized” at the bus stop where the shooting took place. The police have subsequently detailed that a soldier and several civilians who were in the place “faced the attackers and responded to the fire.”
The event has happened a few minutes after 10:00 in the morning local time at the crossroads of Ramot – one of which leads to Jewish settlements located in East Jerusalem, such as Ramot -, when two attackers opened fire against Israeli citizens, according to MDA.
The last report of the MDA indicates that the deceased because of the shooting are three men in about 30 years and another man of about 50, who died in the place, to whom a woman must be added about 50 who was transferred in critical condition to the hospital and died in the medical center.
According to the MDA, twelve more people were transferred to hospitals, of them seven in serious condition due to gunshot wounds, three slight for glass fragments and two more in a moderate state.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with security managers to “evaluate” the situation after the attack, qualified as a terrorist by the authorities. In addition, Netanyahu and the Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, went to the place of the attack.
The newspaper The Times of Israel It reports that the two attackers were Palestinians who proceeded with occupied West Bank, although their identities are still unknown. The two men opened fire against the passengers of a bus, but there are different versions in the local media on whether they got there or fired from the stop.
In videos that circulate on social networks you can see chaos around the bus stop, where the vehicle was at the time of the shooting.
The Israeli army has announced the deployment of soldiers in the area where the shooting occurred and also on the outskirts of the main city of the West Bank, Ramalá. In a statement cited by the EFE agency, the Army indicates that it is looking for suspects, in collaboration with the Police, in the Ramot road crossing area. “At the same time, soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces are surrounding several areas on the outskirts of Ramalá to combat terrorism and reinforce the defense,” adds the note.
For its part, the Palestinian Group Hamás has affirmed in a statement that the attack is “is a natural response to the crimes of the occupation (Israeli) and the extermination war that frees against the Palestinian people” in Gaza, where Israeli forces have killed more than 64,000 people since October 2023.
