The socialist municipal group has demanded this Thursday from the mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala (PP), to immediately clarify what the future of the housing rehabilitation and redevelopment project for the neighborhood of Virgin of Remedya plan financed with European funds that “accumulates three years of delay without any material work having begun.”
The project, approved in June 2022 and financed with 10 million euros from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, it provided for the rehabilitation of 456 homes and the remodeling of the urban environment. The Government transferred five million to the City Council at the end of 2022, with the aim of getting the work started as soon as possible. However, the PSOE points out, more than 40 months later, it has only been awarded the renovation of 72 homes and three of the four lots put out to tender have been left empty and no alternative plan has been announced.
After the unilateral reduction of the project to 288 homes and the adjustment of the subsidy to 6.5 million eurosthe City Council has already lost 3.5 million for the start of work and another five million are still at risk. According to the PSOE, with the current tender, the City Council would only receive 1.5 million for the rehabilitation and neighborhood redevelopment.
April 2024
The socialist councilor Silvia Castell Remember that this situation was already brought to the plenary session in April 2024, when his group demanded that the Barcala government team accelerate the execution to avoid the loss of funds.
Castell denounces that “almost three years have passed and the housing rehabilitation works have not begun, which must be completed before June 30, 2026. There is less and less time and barge “He continues without reacting.”
Warning
The socialist councilor also warns that “the housing rehabilitation funds “They are linked to redevelopment and, the fewer apartments that are renovated, the less funds will be received to redevelop streets.”
Finally, he adds: “It is especially serious that the mayor has been complaining for weeks that he is not granted new European funds, when he has had five million in a drawer for three years and has done absolutely nothing with them. There are no excuses: what is missing is political will and management capacity.”
