An Argentine judge ordered former President Alberto Fernández to go to trial for an alleged case of corruption related to insurance policies subscribed by government agencies during his mandate, between 2019 and 2023.
Fernández will be prosecuted for “negotiations incompatible with the exercise of the public function,” according to the judgment of Judge Sebastián Casanello, published in Argentine media and confirmed by the defending lawyer, Mariana Barbitta, the AFP agency reported.
The former Argentine president, 66, is accused of fraudulent administration for the use of intermediaries by his government, one of which allegedly had links with his office, to hire insurance policies that could have been negotiated directly.
The main intermediary was allegedly the husband of Fernández's personal secretary.
The ex -president did not seek re -election after fulfilling a single mandate, and in December 2023 he delivered the keys of the presidential palace to Javier Milei.

What is the case about?
The accusations of corruption arose when a court ordered the inspection of the telephone of the secretary of Fernández while investigating the complaints of aggression filed against the former president for his ex -partner Fabiola Yáñez.
Yáñez filed a complaint to accuse Fernández of having hit her during his relationship, which ended after he left office.
The ex -president faces another judgment for domestic violence.
The case of corruption involves contracted policies with Nation Seguros, the statement of the state Banco Nación, which Fernández chose to cover government agencies against various types of risks.
Judge Casanello ordered the freezing of approximately US $ 10 million of Fernández's assets, according to Thursday's ruling.
The ex -president's defense rejects these accusations and, according to the press of that country, will appeal the decision.
Fernández's Peronist Movement, which dominated Argentine politics during most postwar period, has been affected by accusations of corruption.
President Cristina Kirchner, another high -ranking Peronist, celebrates a six -year sentence in house arrest after being convicted of fraud in public works contracts awarded during her two mandates.
