The Norwegian ex -Mexican Audun Gronvold, an Olympic medalist at the 2010 Vancouver winter games, died at 49 after being reached by lightning when he was with his wife in a rural cabin, as confirmed by the Norwegian ski federation.

Gronvold was hit by lightning last Saturday and was quickly transferred to a hospital, but could not recover from the wounds and died days later.

“With great sadness we have received the news of the premature death of Audun Gronvold. Our thoughts are with Audun's family, his friends and all those who were close to him,” said the Norwegian federation of skiing in a statement.

Gronvold, originally from Hamar, east of the Nordic country – a border with Sweden – was an athlete highlighted in the Alpine national team for several years before becoming a pioneer of the Norwegian freestyle and the Ski Cross.

He was alpine skier of the Norwegian national team from 1993 to 2004, at which time he got a third place in the Alpine skiing world test held in Sierra Nevada (Spain) in 1999 and two Norwegian national championships.

After changing discipline, he won a bronze medal in the 2005 world acrobatic skiing championship and was Olympic skiing cross bronze at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.

A few months after achieving the Olympic medal, he left the elite sport due to an injury and dedicated himself to developing Norwegian skiing as coach of the national team and member of the Board of Directors of the Norwegian Federation.
