In week seven of the ninth season of the Dana White Consender Series, Bogota Javier “Blair” Reyes assured his entry to the UFC, the most prestigious martial martial arts organization (MMA) in the world, after a blunt triumph for technical knockout.
Reyes, 31, faced the American Justice Torres in the second evening fight and needed just two minutes and 32 seconds to demonstrate his power. With repeated knee to the face, he dropped his rival to the canvas and forced the referee to stop the fight.
Dana White himself, president of the promoter, was in charge of announcing the six new multiannual contracts granted that night, including that of the Colombian. This makes it the first fighter based in Colombia that competes in the UFC.
“I think this is historical for my country. I send everyone to greet everyone, in Bogotá, throughout Colombia. We are going to break it and we will open doors for all those who come behind me,” Reyes said after his victory over Torres.
Minutes later, in an official interview, he reaffirmed his commitment: “This dream is not only mine, it is also that of Colombia. A 100 % Colombian fighter, we do not currently have one and I have to be the first. This is a great dream for all of us.”
Colombia had already had representatives in the UFC, but in all cases it was fighters born in the country who made a career abroad or of children of Colombians formed in other latitudes. Therefore, the arrival of kings, formed and prepared in Bogotá, marks a precedent.
