The leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has recognized on Monday that Spain has reached an agreement in NATO to not increase 5% of GDP military spending in defense. Although he has assumed not to know exactly what covenant Pedro Sánchez has closed, Feijóo has assured that “when the summit” of the alliance ends, it will be seen “if this flexibility given to Spain is given to other countries.” “We will see the content and scope of this flexibility that we have apparently achieved,” he has settled.
In an interview in Esradio, Feijóo has questioned “What covenant?” Sánchez has achieved. “It is not known exactly,” he assumed. “They say you have to meet capabilities objectives. Let's see how it is met,” he added.
NATO general secretary, Mark Rutte, yesterday sent a letter to the Spanish president confirming that agreement. “I understand that Spain is convinced that it can meet the new capacity objectives agreed with a spending trajectory of less than 5% (3.5% in basic defense and 1.5% in security related expenses) of GDP,” says Routte.
After the announcement, Feijóo pointed out Rutte's letter as an act of “propaganda.” “What Sánchez has just said is that he will compromise military spending for the next ten years, without budgets and without going through Congress. That is, he agreed that Spain pays, but when he is no longer. Kicks forward.”
Sánchez's response adds more than 6.5 million visualizations on Twitter.
An answer that Feijóo has branded on Monday of “soez” and “macarra.” The replica on Twitter has been in charge of the general secretary of the PP of MadridAlfonso Serrano, with this literalness: “Pedro, I don't know what worries me anymore: that you appear without means (and without cheekbone makeup) or publish a letter that says exactly the opposite that you keep.”
“We are going to find out what has been agreed and what has not been agreed,” Feijóo insisted. “We commit ourselves to requirements and objectives raised by NATO,” he said. “And on the other hand Mr. Rutte says that if he can do it with 2.1%, accredit it,” he added.
The PP leader has assured that “this”, in reference to the exceptionality with Spain, “goes to 2029” and that “the agreement” of increase in military spending for the whole of NATO allies goes “to 2035”. “No one knows what will happen between 29 and 35,” he said.
Feijóo has repeatedly reiterated his doubts about the agreement ratified yesterday by Rutte, and has slipped that Spain will not be the only beneficiary. “When the summit is over we will see if this flexibility given to Spain is given to other countries. We will see the content and scope of this flexibility that we have apparently achieved.”
Against Spain in the EU
Feijóo has assured that, yes or yes, “Spain has to increase its military expenditure by about 12,000 or 13,000 million, moving from 1.2% to 2.1%”, in reference to the increase in stipend in defense that Pedro Sánchez announced. “He has to accept that he will be the president who will make the greatest increase in the history of the country,” he said about the chief of the Executive.
The PP leader has affirmed that he will delegitimize the action of the Spanish government before his allies of the European right. Again. “I have said it in the EPP (the European PP) and I will say it again at the Summit,” the usual meeting prior to the European councils scheduled for this Thursday. Feijóo has said that it will “repeat to the partners that it is a decision of Sánchez, not of Spain, of the Spanish prime minister, who has no budgets or agreement of the government or speak in the name and representation of the Spaniards.”
