The former advisor to the Ministry of Transport Koldo García has availed himself this Thursday of his right not to testify in the Supreme Court. After this procedure, the Popular Party, which leads the popular accusation, has asked the judge for provisional arrest. At the hearing held, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office has refused to support the precautionary measure of imprisonment, considering that, although they have worsened, there is not enough evidence to request their imprisonment. The judge will make a decision on your situation in the morning.
His summons came after his boss, former Minister José Luis Ábalos, refused to testify and alleged alleged helplessness. The investigator of the case in the high court, Leopoldo Puente, called Koldo García again after receiving a new report where the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard assures that “he acted as custodian and manager of Ábalos's money”, so that “part of the latter's expenses were borne and settled” by his advisor.
The UCO pointed out the existence of a reserve of cash without support in the regular income of the former socialist leader and which Koldo would have available to take charge of payments that would correspond to his then boss, such as alimony for one of his children, the remuneration of the domestic employee or gifts to his partners.
The spotlight has been on Koldo García since February 20, 2024, when the Civil Guard broke into his home in Alicante and took him into custody. The 'Koldo case' had just broken out, which just days later took down Ábalos, a figure of the highest importance in the PSOE. The one who was 'number three' of the socialists ended up expelled from the party and defenestrated in the Mixed Group of Congress.
The scandal brought to light the figure of Koldo, a PSOE activist from Navarra, a former candidate in a town usually controlled by nationalist forces, who carried out escort work while ETA was active and was a former bouncer at brothels and nightclubs. He carried out this task simultaneously as a collaborator of several information services until the current 'number three' of the PSOE, Santos Cerdán, took him to Madrid to place him as the party's driver. And also as guardian of the ballots that gave Sánchez victory in the PSOE primaries.
From there he became Ábalos's advisor and right-hand man, with a notable influence in one of the ministries with the largest budget. He also obtained a seat on the boards of directors of several public companies. The investigation has revealed that his brother was also on the salary of the Administration and that his wife became an assistant secretary in the ministry.
