Catar confirmed on Tuesday to be in discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the organization of the Games of 2036.
“Currently, we have 95% of the necessary sports infrastructure (…) and we have a complete national plan for the facilities to be 100% ready,” said the patron of the Catarí Olympic Committee and president of the candidacy committee, Sheikh Joaan Ben Hamad Al-Thani, in a statement.
The rich gas state, which has already organized the World Cup in 2022, could become “the first country in the Middle East and North Africa in organizing the Olympic Games,” said the Catarí Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed Ben Abdulrahmane Al-Thani, cited by the official press agency.
Since there is the new attribution of the Olympic Games, inaugurated by the attribution in 2021 of the Brisbane Games in 2032 – an edition for which Catar already showed interest – the candidates no longer have the obligation to declare themselves publicly, but they maintain long confidential conversations with the IOC until the final validation of the session.
The former president of IOC Thomas Bach insisted on having a “two -digit number” of candidates interested in organizing the games of 2036 and 2040, among which India, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey and Hungary advance openly.
Due to the forced continental rotation, after editions 2024, 2028 and 2032, respectively in Europe, North America and Oceania, the next edition has many possibilities of being in Asia, unless the first African Olympic Games in history are finally celebrated.
The designation of the host of the Games of 2036 will be one of the first major issues to which the new president Kirsty Coventry faces, who assumed his functions on June 23.
