The National Police A 54-year-old man has been arrested in Alicante for the crime of abandoning an unaccompanied minor after allegedly leaving his son in the month of May at the UBA reception center in San Sebastián, after he arrived from Algeria to Spain through the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández airport.
The arrest occurred within the framework of the Zaugarria operation carried out last week by agents of the National Police assigned to the Gipuzkoa Provincial Immigration and Border BrigadeThe Ministry of the Interior reported this Wednesday in a statement.
The State Security Forces and Corps have detected “the arrival to Spain of foreign minors accompanied by their parents” who are subsequently “abandoned” by them under the premise that they then appear at police stations, juvenile centers and public organizations “explaining that they are in a situation of helplessness“said the source.
In this context and as a result of the collaboration with the rest of the agents involved in the areas of child protection, on October 8, the UBA reception center in San Sebastián reported that two people – a man and a woman – had appeared at its facilities asking about a foster minor and that they had identified as his father and aunt.
Several members of the National Police immediately went to the scene, although upon their arrival, the alleged father had already fled, so a report was initiated to locate him.
The investigation launched determined that the minor had arrived in Spain through Alicante airport and that in the company of his father he had traveled by bus to Bilbaowhere he left him with a friend who, in turn, transferred him to San Sebastián.
Furthermore, it was found that the minor's father had been granted a “study stay” until June 2026 and an address in Alicante, for which he was summoned to testify at the Alicante police station. He showed up voluntarily and was informed of his obligation to take care of his son.
For this reason and once released, the minor's father appeared at the Provincial Police Station of San Sebastián on Thursday, October 23, to pick up his son, who was transferred from UBA to proceed with family reunification.
In this way, the minor was no longer under the guardianship of the public administration after informing the Court of Instruction number 5 of San Sebastián, knowledgeable about the case, as well as the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office, the source has indicated.
