The methodical and premeditated destruction of Ciudad de Gaza has already begun. As a prelude to the expulsion of the hundreds of thousands of people living there to corner them in the south, Israel is demolishing the highest buildings, apartments and offices between ten and fifteen plants. According to the Gaza Civil Defense Agency, in the 72 hours prior to Monday, five of those towers were destroyed. 4,100 people lived in them in 210 apartments. The explosions also damaged 350 tents, where some 3,500 people had taken refuge, located in the vicinity of the buildings.
A month after two years after the beginning of the Israeli offensive against Gaza, the Government of Pedro Sánchez has extended the sanctions against Israel to the limit of what he believes are his possibilities. The impact is merely symbolic and is intended to have a minimum effect on Israel's behavior. The only measure that would seriously harm its economy would be the suspension of its commercial agreement with the European Union. Germany, Hungary and other countries have ruled out that you can get so far. For too long, the Spanish government has trusted that it change until it has concluded that it should take unilateral measures, because otherwise it could be accused of complicity with the genocide.
Faced with generic calls to a high fire that some European leaders have not dared to leave, Sánchez was this Monday further than anyone in Israel's conviction: “It is one thing to protect your country and another very different one, bombard hospitals and kill innocent children, 60,000 dead, two million displaced from their home, half minors, hungry exterminate a helpless people and break all the laws of international law. ”
Sanchez can feel supported in some way by the recent decision of the European government that most believes that his duty is to protect the interests of the Israeli State. The German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz approved a partial embargo on the sale of weapons to Israel without consulting his party or the Bavarian partner of the CSU.
The Council of Ministers added to the measures announced by Sánchez the day before The prohibition of entry into Spain by Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, Ministers of Security and Finance, the ultra -rightist partners of Netanyahu. They are the representatives of Jewish supremacism with more power in the country. They are not the only ones in the government who have made statements of genocidal cut against Gaza. Defense Minister Israel Katz extended a few days ago the threats to Yemen for throwing missiles against Israeli territory. He did it with the biblical language of revenge: “A pest of darkness, a plague of deaths from the firstborn. We will complete the ten pests ”.
Sanchez recalled that the main experts have called what is happening in Gaza as a genocide. It was foreseeable that the Popular Party did not use that word, but at least Alberto Núñez Feijóo said Monday that “what Israel is doing is inadmissible” and that “blocking humanitarian aid (A Gaza) is unforgivable.” In similar terms, the president of Extremadura and the mayor of Valencia were spoken.
The mayor of Madrid stunned the line manifested by Isabel Díaz Ayuso. José Luis Martínez Almeida said that “there are no evidence” that there has been a genocide, despite the figures of the dead of civilians – including 17,000 minors – and the images that have been seen in the last two years of whole cities razed and turned into lunar landscapes where living is already impossible.
It was soon clear that the PP knows that it cannot defend Israel, but to attack Sanchez. Its leaders have said that the government's response is only “a smoke screen” – a somewhat daring concept to refer to something related to Gaza – that is, a tactic supposedly so that other issues are not mentioned.
“Sánchez tries to talk about Gaza not to mention the prostitution businesses of his political family,” said Cuca Gamarra. In the field of principles, it is doubtful that this has more value to affirm, as Sánchez did, that “Spain cannot be complicit in this barbarism.” For the PP, it is more profitable to talk about Begoña Gómez than from Gaza.
The PP had reproached Sánchez for not talking more about Israeli hostages in Hamas. Sanchez reiterated on Tuesday that he claims his release and that he condemned the attack of Hamas of October 7, 2023 against Israeli territory.
The last hope for that twenty hostages that are believed to remain alive was the negotiation in which Qatar was mediator between the US and the Palestinian group. Israel cut that road at the root and almost sentenced its own compatriots to death by launching an attack against the Qatari capital where the Hamas leaders who participate in the conversations reside. Hamas has a political presence in Qatar for years with the permission and knowledge of the Israeli government. Hours later, Qatar announced that it ends its intermediation work.
Einav Zangauker, mother of one of those hostages, accused Netanyahu of having sabotaged attempts to reach an agreement that made his release possible: “It could be that at this time The prime minister has killed me (son) Matán and seal his destiny. Who has decided to endanger his life has killed him. Why does Netanyahu insist on preventing any possibility of agreement?
The most immediate Israeli plan is to force by force that about one million people move to southern Gaza, to an area that does not exceed 12% of its total area. There the infrastructure necessary to host and feed such a high number of people has not been created. Previous “humanitarian areas” – in the jargon of the Netanyahu government – have suffered attacks in the form of bombings. There has been any safe place in Gaza for a long time.
