In a coordinated action between judicial authorities, security forces and international organizations, five raids were carried out and arrest warrants were issued in Argentina, specifically in the provinces of Chubut, Mendoza and Río Negro against the distributing the illegal television service by streaming Magistv. This intervention is part of a large -scale investigation into digital piracy that is carried out in several Latin American countries.
The operation was promoted by the collaboration between LaLiga – the main professional football league in Spain – and the alliance against audiovisual piracy in Latin America (Alliance), in coordination with the Court of Guarantees No. 4 of San Isidro. The Argentine Federal Police, local forces and companies such as Mercado Libre and Mercado Pago also participated, which contributed relevant information to the case.
One of the focuses of the investigation was UV Digital World, an Internet provider that openly offered Magistv Pro. Through its commercial premises and social networks, this company – registered with ENACOM and member of the Cabase Chamber – promoted illegal IPTV services as if it were legitimate offers. The case has put on the table the role that some Internet suppliers play in the distribution of pirate content, either by direct action or due to lack of collaboration with the authorities.
During the raids, at least four individuals involved in the sale and distribution of illegal accounts were identified and requested. According to the investigation, the suspects used digital payment accounts – as a payment market, orange X and Binance – to receive large sums of money, in some cases exceeding 160 million Argentine pesos. The collected tests include bank movements, IP addresses and digital messaging records.
A regional strategy against piracy
The intervention in Argentina is part of a regional offensive against illegal online content. Alliance and LaLiga have promoted different measures to curb digital piracy, such as DNS and IP blocking to illegal websites and legal actions to eliminate applications such as Magistv and Flujotv from digital stores, although they still face resistance from some technological platforms.
Another relevant advance was the creation of the first “War Room” antipirable in the country, a joint work space that brought together judicial specialists, technicians and representatives of the audiovisual sector in order to design more effective strategies to combat this type of crime.
Risks for users and damage to the industry
Beyond the legal aspect, pirate platforms represent a direct risk for users. When installing unofficial applications, they are exposed to possible digital fraud, theft of personal data and malware attacks. At the structural level, piracy compromises the sustainability of the audiovisual industry, reducing the income that supports sports clubs, competitions and legal transmissions.
