The Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) has started the bidding process for the “Project of modernization and improvement of valves of delivery of the La Pedrera reservoir to the Campo de Cartagena canal”, which is located in the municipality of Orihuela. The action has a base budget of 1,581,552 euroswhich are financed with FEDER funds, and an execution period of ten months.
The objective, the basin organization has indicated, is to recover full operation and improve hydraulic management. The La Pedrera reservoir is a fundamental infrastructure within the Tajo-Segura post-transfer systemgiven that regulates flows destined for both the irrigation of Campo de Cartagena and the urban supply managed by the Commonwealth of the Canales del Taibilla.

According to the CHSthe continued use of its facilities has caused breakdowns and losses of tightness in the gates of the intake towers, as well as difficulties in the operation of several Howell-Bunger valves, which makes precise control of the supplied flow rates difficult.
These failures cause the leakage of fluids or the entry of external agents, causing problems such as contamination, system inefficiency or waste of resources.
Planned actions
The works include the comprehensive rehabilitation of the gates and intake elements of the dammodernization and revision of existing Howell-Bunger valves, the installation of a new gate in the post-transfer channel (sector IV) to improve regulation and facilitate its operation and the sending of the signal from the channel flume to the valve house to optimize hydraulic management, as well as clearing and removal of material in different areas of the main dam and dams 1 and 2 and repair of the expropriation milestones of the reservoir.
The modernization of the La Pedrera valves will allow improve supply reliability and strengthen system management of the Tajo-Segura post-transfer, in accordance with current exploitation needs, the Confederation has concluded.
