“And what have the Romans do for us?” They wondered in the popular Mushy Python movie, 'Brian's life', And the truth is that, in addition to wine, democracy, roads, aqueducts, costumes and some type of footwear, They did many things that we continue to use in today.

The culture of Rome more than 2000 years is still the origin of Europe that we know today and every time something related to it is found, it is always news. Now, an interesting and curious piece has just been discovered that has left archaeologists somewhat bewildered, mainly by good conservation and also for its extraordinary size.

A LeBron James in Roman times

The discovery has occurred when archaeologists were working on the Vindolanda Trust project to excavate the strong Roman Magna in northern England. The excavation began from abroad progressing towards the main fort, something that causes discoveries of defensive ditches in that outer ring. These searches brought to light ceramic and other small objectsbut what the team has truly be surprised is the appearance of three 2000 -year -old leather shoes still intact, including one of some impressive 32 centimeters long.

“I immediately caused astonishment between volunteers and staff,” Rachel Frame wrote, Main archaeologist of the excavation project, in the project newspaper.

The first shoe was apparently intact since it kept all the layers of the sole without touching, it also had part of the heel and most of the nails of the outer sole. “This gives us a very accurate vision of how Roman shoes were manufactured: multiple leather layers were used to form the sole, together with tenazes, seams and nails. These also reinforced the outer surface for walking and are found in many shoes, ”said Frame.

Another shoes was cut in its front, which prevented the original size from being estimated. But the one who was a big surprise for all was the one found at the bottom of a ditch that broke ankles, designed to catch soldiers. The old footwear found in the trench measured, from heel to tip, about 32 centimeters. This is comparable to the foot of one of the current NBA stars, LeBron James, who wears a shoe from number 15, in the carving of that country, (a 49-50 in Europe).
