The German Bayer Leverkusen announced on Monday the dismissal of the Dutch coach Erik Ten Hag, who signed last May replacing the Spanish Xabi Alonso, current Real Madrid coach. It barely lasted three games at the head of the pharmaceutical picture.
“The Bayer 04 Leverkusen has fired coach Erik Ten Hag with an immediate effect. This has been decided by the shareholders committee, supervisory body of the club, on the recommendation of the Bayer Directorate 04. The assistant coaching staff will provisionally take over training,” said the German club.
In his statement Simon Rolfes, sports general director, admits that “it has not been an easy decision. No one wanted to take this step. However, the last weeks have shown that, with this composition, it is not possible to build a new and successful team.”
“We firmly believe in the quality of our team and now we will do everything possible to take the following steps in its development with a new configuration,” said the manager, who in his stage as a player also defended the colors of Leverkusen.
Meanwhile, the Spanish Fernando Carro, general director of the Bayer, acknowledges that “a dismissal at this early stage of the season is painful, but, from our point of view, it was necessary” and ensures that the goal of the club “remains to be achieved the objectives set for this season.”
Ten Hag, 55, central defense in his active footballer era, had directed before arriving at Bayer Leverkusen to Go Ahead Eagles, to the second team of Bayern Munich, to Utrecht, Al Ajax – his most successful stage as a coach – and Manchester United.
This stage has lasted a couple of months, because it began to exercise on July 1. It ended after adding only one point in the first two days of the Bundesliga after drawing in the Werder Bremen field and falling at home against Hoffenheim. He also won the modest Grosspaspach in the Cup.
This Monday's training will be assumed by his assistant, Rogier Meijer, who had been the main coach of the Dutch Nec nec Nimega and who arrived at the club by Ten Hag. There is still no clear horizon about who could take the reins of the team officially.
